{"id":6615,"date":"2008-04-21T07:33:00","date_gmt":"2008-04-21T07:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/traveloscopy.com\/travel-news\/juggling-acts-a-winning-turn\/"},"modified":"2008-04-21T07:33:00","modified_gmt":"2008-04-21T07:33:00","slug":"juggling-acts-a-winning-turn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/traveloscopy.com\/travel-news\/2008\/04\/juggling-acts-a-winning-turn\/","title":{"rendered":"JUGGLING ACT\u2019S A WINNING TURN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_OY-0d2rKv_Q\/SAxDyEIU9RI\/AAAAAAAAC2I\/fpraYamJPqA\/s1600-h\/blackjack_majors_line-735783.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_OY-0d2rKv_Q\/SAxDyEIU9RI\/AAAAAAAAC2I\/fpraYamJPqA\/s320\/blackjack_majors_line-735783.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5191598997832529170\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_OY-0d2rKv_Q\/SAxDyUIU9TI\/AAAAAAAAC2Y\/URpodn9dnS4\/s1600-h\/Ferngrove+ORCHID+DIAMOND+Chardonnay-736972.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_OY-0d2rKv_Q\/SAxDyUIU9TI\/AAAAAAAAC2Y\/URpodn9dnS4\/s320\/Ferngrove+ORCHID+DIAMOND+Chardonnay-736972.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5191599002127496498\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>YOUR WEEKLY WINE COLUMN for week beginning 21 April 2008<\/p>\n<p>wine with david ellis<\/p>\n<p>Senior Winemaker at Western Australia\u2019s Ferngrove Vineyards, Kim Horton puts the success of his stunning 2007 Diamond Chardonnay down to two things \u2013 a bit of juggling in the vineyard and a bit more in the winery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c2007 was one of the most intense and earliest harvests we\u2019ve seen at Ferngrove,\u201d he says. \u201cA blast of hot weather in early March had us working really hard in the vineyard, followed by our juggling acts which really paid off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kim chose fruit from four blocks carrying two different vine clones for his 2007 Diamond Chardonnay, picking one parcel before the hot weather and the second after it \u2013 but ultimately being forced to abandon the latter-picked.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this problem, the resultant wonderful nectarine, lemongrass, ginger and spicy oak make this beautifully creamy drop one that enthusiasts of the Ferngrove label (based in the Frankland River region 360k\u2019s south of Perth) will quickly snap up \u2013 particularly as only limited supplies are available.<\/p>\n<p>Invest $23.99 and serve with chicken or pork and stir-fried Asian greens.<\/p>\n<p>ONE FOR LUNCH: Back in the 1830s Major Thomas Mitchell wrote glowingly of the \u201crich and verdant\u201d pastoral lands he\u2019d discovered in Central Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>Settlers soon followed the route of \u201cthe Major\u2019s Line,\u201d and today growers like David and Ruth Norris at Faraday on the foothills of Mount Alexander (from which Mitchell wrote his praises) are producing enviable quality wine grapes.<\/p>\n<p>Blackjack Vineyards\u2019 2005 Major\u2019s Line Shiraz made from the Norris\u2019 fruit displays beautifully soft blackberry, liquorice and a little menthol fruit flavour, coupled with oak tannins; good value at $25 with<\/p>\n<p>WINE OF THE WEEK: Katnook Estate\u2019s 2007 Founder\u2019s Block Sauvignon Blanc: zesty and racy with loads of gooseberry, elderflower and a touch of fresh citrus on the palate.
