{"id":6553,"date":"2009-07-07T09:03:00","date_gmt":"2009-07-07T09:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/traveloscopy.com\/travel-news\/by-george-heres-a-cool-riesling-food-idea\/"},"modified":"2009-07-07T09:03:00","modified_gmt":"2009-07-07T09:03:00","slug":"by-george-heres-a-cool-riesling-food-idea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/traveloscopy.com\/travel-news\/2009\/07\/by-george-heres-a-cool-riesling-food-idea\/","title":{"rendered":"BY GEORGE, HERE\u2019S A COOL RIESLING FOOD IDEA"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_OY-0d2rKv_Q\/Sl2bZ_YE5zI\/AAAAAAAAG3U\/cY6AZXVrdYA\/s1600-h\/wicks_riesling-715660.jpg\" style=\"clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5358610002452211506\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_OY-0d2rKv_Q\/Sl2bZ_YE5zI\/AAAAAAAAG3U\/cY6AZXVrdYA\/s320\/wicks_riesling-715660.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 78%;\">Wc06Jul09<\/span><\/p>\n<p>david ellis<\/p>\n<p>IF you enjoy white fish and a good white wine to go with it, you&#8217;ll not do better than to pan-fry some South Australian King George Whiting fillets and serve them up with a nicely chilled Riesling \u2013 its one of the great food\/wine matches of all-time.<\/p>\n<p>And one quite excellent drop for just such a match-up is Wicks Estate&#8217;s 2008 Riesling from the cooler Adelaide Hills: here&#8217;s a wine whose lime and citrus blossom aromas, and lively fruit-intense palate of citrus and tropical fruit and fine minerality, goes superbly with whiting.<\/p>\n<p>Simon and Tim Wicks, whose family long had horticultural interests in the foothills at Highbury, east-north-east of Adelaide, kick-started Wicks Estate in 1999 when they bought 54ha at Woodside, 10km north of Hahndorf.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_OY-0d2rKv_Q\/Sl2bZqmqLGI\/AAAAAAAAG3M\/kqMjdZUJm9w\/s1600-h\/Firestick+Shiraz+06-714017.jpg\" style=\"clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5358609996876229730\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_OY-0d2rKv_Q\/Sl2bZqmqLGI\/AAAAAAAAG3M\/kqMjdZUJm9w\/s320\/Firestick+Shiraz+06-714017.jpg\" \/><\/a>It provided them with a range of soil types ideally suited for growing various varietals, including Riesling, and in 2004 they built a state-of-the-art winery, signed-up the highly-skilled and respected Tim Knappstein to make their wines for them\u2026 and as they say, the rest is now history.<\/p>\n<p>Pay $18 for the 2008 Wicks Estate Riesling, and treat family or friends to this and those pan-fried King George Whiting fillets \u2013 for good measure, topped-off with a stir-fry of diced mushrooms, asparagus, garlic, chives and almonds.<\/p>\n<p>ONE FOR LUNCH: A REWARDING red to savour with a hearty Winter&#8217;s leg of lamb is Poole&#8217;s Rock Firestick 2006 Hunter Valley McLaren Vale Shiraz, a wine sourced from these two premium grape-growing regions that whilst far-flung from each, in fact have much in common.<\/p>\n<p>That commonality is long growing seasons, mild temperatures and fertile soils that allow the grapes to develop full and intense flavours; this wine&#8217;s rich with spicy plum, blackberry and vanillin oak, ideal to go with that roast lamb\u2026 and even better still, it&#8217;s remarkably well-priced at just $12.95 a bottle.<\/p>\n<p>(NEED A FOOD\/DRINK IDEA?
