Travelling to Thailand is not difficult. It\u2019s well-served by airlines at all price points, has decent infrastructure, and offers a wide variety of accommodation options, ranging from ultra-luxury resorts to comfortable dormitory-style hostels.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In truth, the hardest part is choosing where to go and how to stay. Many tourists and holidaymakers opt for a package that includes airfare and accommodation, most likely at a resort property in a destination like Phuket<\/a> or Koh Samui<\/a>. But independent travellers are driving other accommodation types, especially in Bangkok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the capital, from On Nut to Sukhumvit and Siam, there is an abundance of hospitality options, with new properties emerging constantly. And it\u2019s no surprise why. According to Euromonitor International, Bangkok was named the world\u2019s top tourism city in 2024 after it welcomed a record-breaking 32.4 million visitors, almost 10 million more than second-placed Istanbul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visitors tend to stay longer in Bangkok<\/a>, at least a week, sometimes two, with an average of stay of nine days. These more extended stays tend to favour more budget-friendly properties in the midscale and upper midscale categories. 3.5 to 4-star if you like. The new properties in this price range outshine some older 5-star properties. Take the vibrant Melia INNSiDE<\/a> at On Nut and Moxy Bangkok Ratchaprasong as examples. Pricing is keen and competition high, so a week in Bangkok is not going to break the bank. A half-decent hotel can be had most nights of the year for under A$100.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TIP: <\/strong>The low season is from June to September, while the high season begins in October and lasts until December, reaching its peak from November to March.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, Airbnb is filling a significant demand for long-stays, but hotel brands are responding by offering serviced apartments as a cost-effective alternative. These rooms typically provide much more space and usually include kitchen and laundry facilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One example is Rembrandt Residences<\/a>, which is attached to the famous hotel of the same name in Soi 18, providing guests with access to most hotel facilities and restaurants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another stand-out example is from the Thai-based Onyx Hospitality Group. The Shama<\/a> brand of serviced apartments has five locations in key areas of the capital: Asoke<\/a>, Sukhumvit, Ekamai, Petchburi, and Yen-Akat. Modern and spacious with hotel-like facilities, they offer a substantial saving over full-service hotel rooms of a comparable quality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a glittering feather in their cap, Onyx also has a flagship brand, Oriental Residence<\/a> in Lumphini, the city’s diplomatic district. Oriental Residence elevates serviced apartments to the next level and has recently earned the One MICHELIN Key Award, as well as membership in the Small Luxury Hotels of the World.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When booking, it pays to shop the various Online Travel Agents (OTAs) as well as direct booking with the property. Be careful that the quoted rate includes the mandatory taxes and service charges, as not all territories require this disclosure. In Australia, however, it is a legal requirement to include all such charges in the quoted price.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The same principle applies when comparing reviews. You may find that the same property has substantially different ratings on different sites. This can sometimes be attributable to the commission paid by the property to the booking agent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
