From 24 to 26 January, Belmore Park in Haymarket will be transformed into a bustling marketplace, exploding with the sights, sounds and tastes of Asia as part of the City of Sydney\u2019s program of events to welcome the Year of the Horse.<\/span><\/div>\n
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said she was thrilled to see this year\u2019s up line up of colourful stalls, workshops and entertainment.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cPeople born in the Year of the Horse are characterised by their grandiosity and magnificence \u2013 that fits the City\u2019s Chinese New Year celebrations perfectly,\u201d the Lord Mayor said.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cCome and see a flurry of colour and excitement with dozens of lion dancers, world-class performances and a colourful sky lit up by firecrackers \u2013 and don\u2019t forget to stop and enjoy some of Sydney\u2019s finest Asian cuisine.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cThe markets are a much-loved feature of the Chinese New Year celebrations, attracting thousands of people each year to celebrate our city\u2019s diversity and also provide a fantastic boost to local businesses.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
The festival launch on Friday 24 January in Belmore Park will feature live performances that ring in the sounds of Asia, including the beats of traditional Chinese drummers.<\/span><\/div>\n
In a first for Australian audiences, the exhilarating outdoor performance,\u00a0Compartmentalized,<\/em>\u00a0will bring together champion Chinese and Australian breakdancers to stretch the boundaries of physical theatre.<\/span><\/div>\n
The SBS PopAsia radio crew will blast non-stop contemporary Asian pop to keep the crowds moving, with a heated search for Sydney\u2019s 2014 Chinese New Year Karaoke Champion taking place on Saturday evening.<\/span><\/div>\n
On Saturday, kids can share in the wonder of Lunar New Year with a puppet-making workshop and puppet show. Then on Sunday, adults can wind down with a taste of Asian culture as part of an evening outdoor film screening.<\/span><\/div>\n
With 18 food stalls selling classic Asian dishes from juicy dumplings to sizzling stir-fries, family and friends can come together and enjoy all the exciting features on offer.<\/span><\/div>\n
Visitors to the markets can also learn how to recreate these unique flavours in their own kitchen, with the AYAM Kitchen offering live demonstrations from top chefs including festival ambassador Chui Lee Luk sharing their secrets to achieving an authentic Asian taste.<\/span><\/div>\n
Visitors can also take a piece of Asia home with a huge range of stalls selling traditional New Year\u2019s gifts.<\/span><\/div>\n
The\u00a0Festival Launch<\/strong>\u00a0will be held from 6-8pm on Friday 24 January at Belmore Park, between Eddy Avenue and Hay Street, Haymarket.<\/span><\/div>\n
The\u00a0Chinese New Year Markets<\/strong>\u00a0will be open from 4-10pm on Friday 24 January and 11am-10pm on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 January at Belmore Park.<\/span><\/div>\n
All events are free, along with bike parking available on site.<\/span><\/div>\n
