{"id":15738,"date":"2013-03-17T23:31:00","date_gmt":"2013-03-17T23:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/traveloscopy.com\/travel-news\/three-generations-behind-this-rising-star\/"},"modified":"2013-03-17T23:31:00","modified_gmt":"2013-03-17T23:31:00","slug":"three-generations-behind-this-rising-star","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/traveloscopy.com\/travel-news\/2013\/03\/three-generations-behind-this-rising-star\/","title":{"rendered":"THREE GENERATIONS BEHIND THIS RISING STAR"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\" trbidi=\"on\">\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div lang=\"EN-AU\" link=\"blue\" vlink=\"purple\">\n<div>\n<div><span>Wc18Mar13<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<b><\/b>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>David Ellis<u><\/u><u><\/u>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>WITH a history dating back just a dozen years, the Hunter Valley&#8217;s First Creek certainly qualifies in the up-and-coming category \u2013 and one of the Hunter&#8217;s most exciting at that.<u><\/u><u><\/u>\n<\/div>\n<table cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-xH4SdxxBKCo\/UUZSUKqEi9I\/AAAAAAAAeLo\/alBk-wN4NaE\/s1600\/2011%2BWR%2Bchardonnay%2Betched-788091.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-xH4SdxxBKCo\/UUZSUKqEi9I\/AAAAAAAAeLo\/alBk-wN4NaE\/s320\/2011%2BWR%2Bchardonnay%2Betched-788091.jpg\"><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>PERFECT with oven-roasted whole<br \/>snapper, potatoes, onions and tomatoes.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>With a family being involved in hotels in Newcastle and on the NSW South Coast from when he was a small child, Greg Silkman did a Science Degree at Newcastle University, then with a partner bought Tamburlaine Winery in 1986, ten years later decided to go out on his own and buy his own winery, Allanmere Wines.<u><\/u><u><\/u>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>And the following year with several partners he bought land at Pokolbin and established First Creek Wines, with their first product hitting the shelves in 2001.<u><\/u><u><\/u>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Today three generations of the Silkman family run the company, including Greg&#8217;s daughter-in-law Liz Silkman (nee Jackson) who has been Chief Winemaker since 2009.<u><\/u><u><\/u>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>A just-released 2011 Winemaker&#8217;s Reserve Chardonnay is a stand-out in their portfolio, a truly classic Hunter Chardonnay with a beautifully seamless mix of lemon, rockmelon and white peach on the palate and a wonderfully intense creamy structure.<u><\/u><u><\/u>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<table cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-Q6WKFdMo1KE\/UUZSUyuYpcI\/AAAAAAAAeL0\/tL4TDCTlNe0\/s1600\/Mandala%2BPinot%2BNoir%2BNV.sml-790478.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-Q6WKFdMo1KE\/UUZSUyuYpcI\/AAAAAAAAeL0\/tL4TDCTlNe0\/s320\/Mandala%2BPinot%2BNoir%2BNV.sml-790478.jpg\"><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>GREAT choice with roast duck served<br \/>with a fruity sauce or chutney.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<div>Pay $40 and enjoy with whole snapper oven-roasted with sliced potatoes, onions, tomatoes, and well-basted with lemon, garlic and parsley.<u><\/u><u><\/u>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<i>ONE TO NOTE: <\/i>MANDALA in Victoria&#8217;s Yarra Valley has released an interestingly quite soft and delicate 2011 Pinot Noir made from 80% fruit from the company&#8217;s Yarra Junction vineyard and 20% from its Dixon&#8217;s Creek.<u><\/u><u><\/u>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Forever fastidious about their fruit, Mandala discarded 30% of what they picked, retaining only the best 70% for this wine that&#8217;s got soft raspberry, cherry and strawberry fruit flavours on the palate, nice acidity, fine oak tannins and earthy and savoury notes.<u><\/u><u><\/u>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>At $28 a nice choice with roast duck served with a fruity sauce or chutney.<u><\/u><u><\/u>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<i>(NEED A FOOD\/DRINK IDEA?
