{"id":12873,"date":"2013-04-08T16:17:00","date_gmt":"2013-04-08T16:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/traveloscopy.com\/travel-news\/day-2-at-sea\/"},"modified":"2013-04-08T16:17:00","modified_gmt":"2013-04-08T16:17:00","slug":"day-2-at-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/traveloscopy.com\/travel-news\/2013\/04\/day-2-at-sea\/","title":{"rendered":"Day 2: At Sea"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\" trbidi=\"on\">\n<br \/>Day 2: At Sea <\/p>\n<p>A day at sea is a perfect chance to explore the vessel that will be our home <br \/>for the next few weeks and the MS <i>Expedition<\/i> is certainly a homely ship. <br \/>Beginning life as a hard-working ferry in 1972, most of her days were spent <br \/>carrying vehicles and passengers between the Baltic countries until rescued <br \/>from this life of toil by G Adventures (then GAP) in 2008 after the <br \/>unfortunate loss of the &#8216;little red ship&#8217; in the Antarctic in 2007. Refitted <br \/>with comfortable cabins for up to 130 guests, a library, gym, dining room <br \/>and Zodiac facilities, she began her new life in 2008. A sturdy <br \/>ice-strengthened (1B) ship of 104m and 3960 GRT, she cruises at a leisurely <br \/>14 knots. <\/p>\n<p>Briefings, as per normal, include crew and expedition staff introductions. <br \/>The seasoned and well-travelled team include Susan Adie, who began her <br \/>expedition cruising career in 1989, spending most of her years with Quark. <br \/>The most unusual introduction however, was for Mike (just Mike), our <br \/>security team leader and former British Army &#8216;specialist&#8217; who assured us his <br \/>trio of highly experienced professionals were expert in dealing with &#8220;tricky <br \/>situations&#8221;.
