The official start to winter in Queenstown will blast into action on the shores of Lake Wakatipu when the 39<\/span>th<\/sup>\u00a0American Express Queenstown Winter Festival kicks off\u00a0tomorrow\u00a0(Friday, 21 June).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

From\u00a05:30pm, thousands of visitors and locals are expected to crowd downtown Queenstown to join the\u00a0American Express Opening Party and Fireworks, the always explosive start to New Zealand\u2019s ten coolest days of winter.<\/span><\/div>\n

MC\u2019d by Kiwi comedians\u00a0Urzila Carlson and Paul Ego,\u00a0the event will start with a celebration of local talent with performances by\u00a0Wakatipu High rock band The Fletcherz and winners of the recent Queenstown original song contest Songstars.<\/span><\/div>\n

Iconic Kiwi musician Dave Dobbyn will perform with 20 students from local primary schools\u00a0before\u00a0the highly-anticipated fireworks display signals the official declaration that winter has started and celebrations for gathered revelers have begun.<\/span><\/div>\n

After the fireworks, Dave Dobbyn will perform an hour long set of kiwi anthems from his forty plus year career.<\/span><\/div>\n

\nFestival Manager Lisa Buckingham says that all the year-long preparations are in place to ensure that the southern hemisphere\u2019s biggest celebration of winter is going to be as successful as the thirty\u2013eight before.<\/span>\"Queenstown\n<\/div>\n
\u201cThe Festival team are ready, Queenstown is ready and, surrounded by picture perfect fresh snow, nature is more than ready to get this winter season officially declared underway.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n

The Queenstown community pulls out all stops annually to stage what is now the southern hemisphere\u2019s biggest celebration of winter.\u00a0 A local business that has risen to the challenge above and beyond in 2013 is Queenstown\u2019s iconic and much-loved entertainment venue, The World Bar.<\/span><\/div>\n

Just one month after the venue in the heart of downtown Queenstown burned down, The World Bar will launch a temporary \u2018pop up\u2019 venue called\u00a0\u2018The Find\u2019\u00a0on Friday 28 June\u00a0to host\u00a0Thank George It\u2019s\u00a0Friday, a much-anticipated event on the Festival calendar and their own official opening party.<\/span><\/div>\n

While everyone\u2019s attention will be on celebrating with music, humour and fireworks\u00a0on Friday\u00a0night, earlier in the day the Queenstown Chamber of Commerce organised\u00a0Gen-i Business Luncheon\u00a0at Skyline Gondola will discuss Queenstown\u2019s new conference centre.<\/span><\/div>\n

Ngai Tahu General Manager David Kennedy will facilitate the debate between Alan Trotter, CEO Conference and Incentives New Zealand,Bjoern Spreitzer, International Business Events Manager\u00a0from Tourism New Zealand, Jim Boult, CEO Christchurch Airport and Adam Feeley, CEO Queenstown Lakes District Council.<\/span><\/div>\n

Back downtown, the\u00a0American Express Winter Wonderland Ice Rink\u00a0returns to the Village Green this year and from\u00a0tomorrow, people can skate from\u00a010am until 10pm\u00a0over the next 10 days.<\/span><\/div>\n
