Peru itineraries that entertain the whole family
Travelling with a family in tow can be tricky, especially when not everyone agrees on the itinerary. Peru, however, offers a multitude of adventures and incredible itineraries that will appeal to both kids and adults, ensuring the whole family is catered for.
With Peru’s geographically diverse landscape, fascinating mix of culture and history, world class cuisine and wide range of accommodation, this is a destination guaranteed to send the senses wild and inspire the archaeologist, scientist or jungle kid in all of us.
Here are some tips on how to discover the grandeur of Peru’s Machu Picchu, explore the wild corners of the Peruvian Amazon, and enjoy mouth-watering Peruvian cuisine, all with a family in tow.
Family hikes with the Incas
Choose an alternative Inca trail to Machu Picchu to avoid the crowds and keep the whole family happy. Go via the Urubamba River and Pacaymayo valley to see llamas and alpacas grazing on ichu, one of the few plants that grow at that altitude. This route will also take you across an area locals call the cloud forest, which is the habitat for the Andean bear as well as many different kinds of birds like hummingbirds and sparrows. Expect incredible views, a rich historical journey and llamas around every corner.
Lima for families
Plan plenty of time for the Chocolate Museum, MATE in Barranco, Museo del Oro (The Gold Museum), and take the whole family on an interactive experience at Larco Museum. When everyone needs a break head to the beach and have a day by the sea in Miraflores, a district in Lima known for its shopping areas, gardens and flower-filled parks.
Amazon for the jungle kid in all of us
Peru’s Amazon rainforest is one of the last true frontiers on earth and a thrilling place for an adventure. Covering almost 60 per cent of the country this is an enigmatic area of Peru to add to any family itinerary. Here there are rare macaws with vivid reds and splashes of yellow and blue feathers, jaguars, anacondas, monkeys and butterflies. It is a world of intense discovery and a real life educational platform for children of all ages.
Kayak across the world’s highest navigable lake
Visit the floating islands of Lake Titicaca by kayak. These islands are made and re-made from the totora reeds which provide home, sustenance and transportation for their residents. It’s a living situation unlike any other. Meet the locals, the Uros tribe, a pre-Incan people from Peru and choose a homestay on Amantani Island to learn about this incredible ancient civilisation.
