Travel the World and Tauck World Discovery will be offering a selection of tours to Oberammergau, Germany in 2010 for its landmark Passionsspiele (The Passion Play). Taking place every ten years, the play is a dramatic recreation of the last days of Christ and is performed by the 1,700 local residents of Oberammergau. As one of Germany’s oldest festivals, 2010 promises to be one of the most important seasons as it marks the end of the first decade of the new millennium.
Performed for five months from May to October, The Passion Play has been performed every decade since 1634. The play originated in the midst of the Thirty Years War, where the Oberammergauers swore an oath that they would perform the “Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ” every ten years if God spared them from the suffering of the bubonic plague. This pledge was fulfilled in 1664 at Pentecost.
Tauck will be offering Oberammergau as a two-night option on the 14-day Romantic Germany tour. In addition to enjoying a performance of The Passion Play, guests will visit the world-famous spa cities of Weisbaden and Baden-Baden, and the magical Neuschwanstein Castle. Visitors will travel down Germany’s fabled Romantic Road and the scenic Black Forest High Road, whilst immersing themselves in the history of Heidelberg, Munich, Potsdam and Berlin. Departures are available from 15 May until 25 September 2010.
Guests can also enjoy two nights in Oberammergau on the 12-day Alpine Interlude tour. Experience the sweeping panorama of alpine splendor from a cable car, before climbing to the highest railway station in Europe aboard a cogwheel train. Explore the exciting cities of Zurich, Berne, Vaduz, Salzburg and Vienna as you take in some of the most inspiring sceneries in the world. Savor a real taste of the Austrian, Italian and Swiss Alps as you visit a traditional Tyrolean Hütte, a famous Viennese café and a 900-year-old monastery winery.
