SARAWAK – THE NEXT DIVING HAVEN

More than the home of the Orangutan, Sarawak is shaping up to assume the mantle as one of Asia’s best diving havens. The pristine waters offer up a wealth of treasure for scuba diving enthusiasts of every ability, including some spectacular reefs and shipwrecks.

A favourite dive spot for local and international diving enthusiasts, Santubong near Kuching is one of the best places to explore the remnants of Japan’s World War II warships, including the Katori Maru, Hisyoshi Maru and Sagiri. The dramatic and spectacular shipwrecks play an important role in the marine ecosystem, acting as shelters and artificial habitats for a myriad of local marine life. Situated at just 22m below the water’s surface, they are also easily accessible to divers, making them an ideal starting point for relative beginners.

Aside from diving, Kuching offers up plenty of other tourist activities. A visit to the Sarawak Cultural Village is not to be missed, while the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre and Bako National Park will tick the box for lovers of nature and adventure.

Dive Spots in Miri

One of the earliest sites to be designated as an official diving designation in Malaysia, Miri is also deservedly one of the country’s most popular, featuring more than 30 dive sites its pristine waters. With visibility ranging from10m to 30m, diving is possible all year round, but experts and locals consider March through to September when the weather is at its best, as the ideal time to visit.

Aside from its natural dive spots, Miri is also home to 5 shipwrecks. Among the most beautiful of these are the artificial reefs created the Kenyalang Wreck, a joint development by Shell and Petronas scuttled in the mid 2000s but other areas worth exploring include the Anemone Garden, Siwa Reef and Hawa Reef.

Tourism Malaysia has recently introduced six scuba diving packages as part of its strategy to position Sarawak as one of Collaborating with four local tour agencies, Tourism Malaysia has put together six dive packages catering to differing levels of experience and expertise.

Available through until December 2015. the the Sarawak Adventure Dive 2014/15 packages include:

· Wreck Dives (Kuching) –4 day/3 nights starting from RM1,860 – RM2,400 per person (a minimum of four people without equipment).

· Dive Package 1 (Kuching) – 3 days/2 nights, starting from RM719 per person.

· Dive Package 2 (Kuching) – 4 days/3 nights, starting from RM1,132 per person.

· Dive Miri – 4 days/3 nights, starting from RM850 – RM1,350 per person (minimum two people).

· Miri Dive Holidays – 5 days/4 nights, starting from RM1,080 – RM1,450 per person.

· Miri Dive & Stay Package @cocohouse – 4 days/3 nights starting from RM748 per person.
