“Quark Expedition has revealed plans to make an announcement “shortly” about a third Antarctic ship for the 2015-16 season.” – TTG Digital, 1 August 2014
Following a report in TTG Digital, ExpeditionCruising.com understands that vessel will be the 1982-built, 137m former Soviet Arctic ferry, Kristina Katarina, renamed Ocean Endeavour. (Callsign: V7DV9, IMO number: 7625811)
Built as a passenger ferry to Dmitriy Shostakovich class in Szczecin, Poland, the 350-berth vessel has had several owners and names during her time and has operated in a variety of locations from the Baltic to the Mediterranean. She last changed hands in January 2014 and was refitted in 1988.
Like many of the world’s expedition vessels, Ocean Endeavour is under the technical management of Florida-based firm, ISP (International Shipping Partners) through their charter arm, FleetPro.
One of the larger vessels in the polar expedition fleet, Ocean Endeavour is almost 13000 GRT with 6 passenger decks. According to ISP, “the ship has great amenities that include a nautical lounge, restaurant, sundeck, pool, Jacuzzi, and gift shop. Interiors are decorated in a contemporary style that invites both light and warmth into the many common spaces.”
ExpeditionCruising.com also understands that Adventure Canada will operate Ocean Endeavour in the northern summer. AC also co-charter Sea Adventurer which recently had her itineraries interrupted due to engine difficulties near Greenland.
