South African Tourism is proudly supporting the Soweto Gospel Choir 2008 Australian Tour and is urging Australian’s to take the chance to see the world renowned performers and be introduced to South African traditions, people and culture from the comfort of a theatre seat.
The Soweto Gospel Choir performs both traditional and contemporary performances, showcasing the vocal and dancing styles that have evolved through time. The performances represent styles from all over the African Continent, in particular South Africa, where styles merge into one another, transporting the audience to an alternate time and culture.
“The Soweto choir is a unique blend of authentic South African cultural expression,” says Bangu Masisi, General Manager of South African Tourism.
“Their upcoming Australian tour will allow Australian audiences to sample a small taste of South Africa and allow them to be inspired by what we have to offer as a tourist destination. We hope that the groundbreaking performances on stage will ensure that South Africa is top of mind when the audience member is choosing their next holiday destination” concludes Bangu Masisi
The Soweto Gospel Choir has performed throughout the world, receiving two Grammy Awards as well as the ‘Best International Choir’ at the U.S based, Gospel Music Awards. The Soweto Gospel Choir repertoire expresses the recognition of the past as well as the celebration of the harmony of the present and what lies ahead.
The Soweto Choir has performed with international artists such as Bono, from U2, as well as performing for the former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela.
Funds raised through The Soweto Choir’s performances support the charity that was set up by the choir, ‘Nkosi’s Haven Vukani’ which is part of ‘Nkosi’s Haven’, to support the lives of AIDS Orphans in South Africa. The charity was set up in the memory of Nkosi Johnson, a 12 year old AIDS activist that inspired many.
The Soweto Gospel’s Australia Tour will celebrate Africa with the support of South African Tourism. The ‘African Spirit’ Tour will feature in locations throughout Australia. Tickets are available though Ticketek.
