Orion’s Borneo expeditions – endangered wildlife, ancient temples and coral reefs

Time is running out in order to secure space aboard the expedition cruise ship Orion for voyages to Borneo during September, October and November 2013.

“Popular demand and an unprecedented booking rate have reduced the number of cabins still available on these Borneo voyages” advised Joel Katz, Chief Operating Officer of Orion Expedition Cruises. “Now in our third year of voyages to this extraordinary island we have refined the destinations to present two exceptional itineraries across three voyages. Both itineraries offer the chance to experience connection with endangered wildlife in their natural habitat including a highlight visit to Dr Galdikas’ orang-utan rehabilitation centre, Camp Leakey.”

Depending on the selected itinerary voyages either start or finish in Bali. The 29 September ten night Borneo Discovery expedition includes an unforgettable trip to the island of Java to explore the site of the world’s largest Buddhist temple at Borobudur. Both itineraries include a scenic trip on local klotoks up the Sekonyer River to Camp Leakey orang-utan rehabilitation centre in Tanjung Puting National Park. Orion guests will see and interact with some of the 300 or so orang-utans cared for here.  Tana Toraja, “Land of the Heavenly Kings”, in the highlands of central Sulawesi, offers a rare introduction into unique and sometimes confronting animistic cultures.

The two Faces in the Forest voyages in October and November 2013 feature Camp Leakey along with visits to Kuching (for Semenggoh Rehabilitation Centre) and Bako National Park, renowned for its rainforests, wildlife, waterfalls and extraordinary plant life. The hundreds of islands that make up the Natuna and Anambas archipelagos provide ample opportunity to swim, snorkel and enjoy abundant marine life and coral reefs.

Encounter endangered wildlife, explore ancient Buddhist temples, gain insight into remote cultures and discover extraordinary marine habitats on Orion Expedition Cruises’ Borneo voyages.
