New Zealand's largest street festival
From 23 - 24 February the inner city of Wellington will be closed to traffic for New Zealand's largest ever two-day street festival – the Cuba Street Carnival. Now in its sixth year, the event which started as a celebration of Wellington's artistic community has since grown to become a major drawcard for the city attracting crowds of over 100,000.
Each year the Carnival has grown in strength and support. The Event Director's aim is to see "it become as iconic and irresistible as other international events such as the Rio Carnival and the Notting Hill Carnival."
The Carnival is held every two years, alternating with the NZ International Festival of the Arts. The event kicks off midday Friday with market stalls, international street performers and an evening outdoor film fiesta.
Throughout the day and into the night music lovers will have the opportunity to revel in a diverse range of quality NZ music with ten performance stages. There will be an expansive programme of New Zealand music with a focus on Pacific, Jazz, Latin and Roots.
The Carnival's highlight is the award winning 'Illuminated Night Parade' with floats and performers from all over the country.
