Cruise Greenland with the brand new MS Fram in 2007

MyPlanet Australia offers the first cruise ship exclusively built for use in Greenland in mid-2007. MS Fram, which is part of the Hurtigruten Group’s fleet, is named after the polar ship built and used by Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen on a three year expedition around Greenland in the late 19th century.

The modern cruise ship is 114 metres long and 20 metres wide, covering eight decks and accommodating 318 passengers in 136 cabins. MS Fram will embark on its maiden journey to Greenland from the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik on 27 May, 2007. Two weeks prior, on 19 May, the ship will be named in Oslo by Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mette Marit, MS Fram’s godmother.

MyPlanet offers three different cruise packages onboard MS Fram, with all cruises also catering for handicapped passengers.

The ship’s first cruise is the 13-day East/South Greenland Cruise, which sails from Reykjavik to the eastern and southern Greenland coasts, travelling through the inland ice cap, calving glaciers, lush green mountains and crystal blue fjords. Prices start at $6,766pp, departing Copenhagen, and includes flights to Iceland and Greenland, all meals, some excursions and transfers. The cruise departs 27 May and 6 September.

The nine day Disko Bay Cruise focuses on the western part of Greenland, with its enormous fjord systems with skerries and icebergs. Passengers also have the option of hiking to Santa’s summer cabin. Prices start at $4,234pp, departing Copenhagen, and includes flights to Greenland, all meals, some excursions and transfers. The cruise departs 7, 14, 21 and 28 June, 5, 12, 19 and 26 July and 2 August.

The 16-day Disko Bay and Thule Cruise will take passengers closer to the North Pole than ever before, cruising as far north as Siorapaluk. The sailings combine sea and land-based excursions such as helicopter trips, a Muskoxen safari, dog-sledding and hiking trips, to name a few. Prices start at $8,240pp, departing Copenhagen, and includes flights to Greenland, all meals, some excursions and transfers. The cruise departs 9 and 23 August.

MS Fram was built by the Italian shipyard Fincantieri, the world’s largest supplier of cruise ships.
