JUST A
LITTLE ITALIAN
Exploring
the south of Italy
By Sally Hammond
Pasquale turns towards the
shady tree directly above us. It is laden with huge dark skinned figs,
even
though I've seen none in shops and markets in
Rome,
and indeed have been
adamantly told the season is over. I've even mastered the Italian word
for figs:
fichi (pronounced ‘fee-key') to
be certain they know what I am talking about. He casually picks me off
half a
dozen, and they are so ripe, so gently warmed by the sun that they are
cracking
open, only slightly, at the base allowing a glimpse of the sensuously
lush
amber flesh inside. Ah, bliss! I am in fig
heaven.
Sally Hammond and her husband Gordon were determined
to explore the south of Italy, despite warnings that
it was dangerous and there was nothing to look at. But in amongst the palms and
pergolas, the generosity, spirit and hospitality of the southerners seduces
them as they explore the heel and boot of Italy.
With just a little Italian under their belt, you are given the impression that Italians
are only more than willing to share with you their hearts, homes and kitchens. Just a little Italian has tales of mouth-watering
meals and recipes from sunny courtyards, crazy mountain passes and sublime
wines. This is the perfect book for people who want to explore the south of Italy.
Freelance food and travel writer, Sally
Hammond, lives in Sydney. She has written many books and guides and contributes to several
magazines and newspapers. This book comes on the back of her recent releases
"Playing Chopsticks" and "Australian Regional Food Guide - the best Chef's recipes".
Although she has visited dozens of countries in the 14 years she has been
writing, southern Italy has won a special place in her heart.
