Explore our island
heritage
Residents and visitors to North Stradbroke Island can now follow a new
heritage trail that tells amazing stories about the area's past and
also provides insights into the lives of many people buried in the
Dunwich Cemetery.
The North Stradbroke Island Heritage Trail is the second one in a
series produced by Redland Shire Council, the first being the Cleveland
and Ormiston trail launched last year.
The NSI trail has been produced in collaboration with the North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum Association
‘Importantly, information provided by community members including
Minjerribah Moorgumpin Elders in Council, has helped in capturing and
presenting the cultural heritage of the island in this concise and well
illustrated booklet,' said Mayor Don Seccombe when launching the guide
at the museum on 23 May.
‘Historic photos from Council's collection and from the John Oxley
Library take us back in time through recent eras of the island and
provide a snapshot of people who have shaped its history.'
The booklet, which will be available at visitor centres on the mainland
and at Dunwich, at the museum and at tourist attractions on the island,
features 30 points of interest en route and at Dunwich, Amity and point
Lookout, as well detailing the history of the Dunwich Cemetery and a
number of the people buried there.
‘Council will be promoting the publication to history-based
organisations and interest groups as well as through its general
tourism marketing, said Mayor Seccombe.
‘A significant proportion of visitors want cultural experiences as part
of their holidays so they'll certainly appreciate this new tourism
product.'
‘This is something that will enrich the lives of our local people as well as day trippers and holidaymakers,' he added.
