Cruising the Greek Islands

Cruising the Greek Islands is one of the great Mediterranean experiences.
Tempo Holidays has been
selling Greek holidays in Australia for 15 years and has developed an expert
understanding of travelling around the Greek Islands, and is well qualified to offer island hopping tips.
Local knowledge enhances the
island hopping experience -
Travel Light
Casual clothes are all that
is required, and a jacket for cool evenings. Take an overnight bag that can be
unfolded and used to pack essential items as it is easier to manage for ferry
travel..
Before and
After in Athens
Plan a stay in Athens both before and after the trip around the islands.
Seasonal winds can play havoc with airline and ferry schedules, sometimes
resulting in cancellations. It is not a good idea to plan a connecting flight
from an island to an international flight or another tour departure for this
reason.
Ferry vs Air
Travel
Fly from Athens to the islands, and between islands whereever
possible, in order to maximise the stay and minimise delays with ferries. Advance
bookings are essential, and can be made through your travel agent here. Not all
islands have airports, so sometimes there is no choice.

A Typical Island Ferry
Don't imagine that by taking
a Greek island ferry you are on a luxury cruise! As their main purpose is
commuter and cargo transport, the ferries are usually quite large with many
passenger seats, but offer facilities no more sophisticated than a snack bar or
a cafeteria at best. No pool, no cocktails.
Getting On and
Off Ferries
As
most of the larger ferries carry vehicles, access for passengers is via a steep
staircase from the ship's garage to the passenger decks. Expect a certain
amount of hustle and bustle upon embarkation and disembarkation.
Ferry Routings
Select islands from the same
geographic group. Most ferry companies operate within only one or two groups of
islands, so air travel is best for linking island groups.
Ferry
Schedules
Ferry
schedules are highly subject to change. Confirm pre-booked ferry tickets on
arrival. Some ferry journeys from Athens can take up to 17 hours.
Ferry
Reservations
Ferries
do not necessarily operate on a daily schedule and they are often fully booked
in high season. Seat reservations however, cannot be pre-booked.
Fast Ferries
& Hydrofoils
Fast ferries operate within
some island groups (particularly the Cyclades islands),
but not between different island groups. Faster hydrofoils operate between Greece and Turkey, but are subject to cancellation during rough seas
and/or high winds.
Minimum Stay
Don't rush it! Island life
is very casual and laid back. The recommended minimum stay on any island is 3
nights.
Arrival
Transfer
It is not always a simple
matter to locate the hotel on your own, as many island hotels do not have a
street address. Taxis may be scarce in the high season. A pre-booked transfer
is recommended.
