Never been to Port Davey?
Here's
your chance!On
an island internationally renowned for World Heritage wilderness experiences, Port Davey, in South-West Tasmania, is a
stand-out destination.
Yet
the extreme isolation that lends this awe-inspiring place its special
fascination also severely limits the number of people who will ever experience
what is one of the most remote corners of the globe. Which
is why Tasmania's largest
wilderness cruise company, World Heritage Cruises, believes
that its latest cruise will be a sell-out success.
WHC
is planning a one-off, 5-day/5-night cruise to Port Davey and Bathurst Harbour departing
Strahan on March 9 and returning to Strahan on March 13.
This
wildest of Tasmania's wild places is famously home to the pioneering Denny
King, the extremely rare and endangered Orange Bellied Parrot, and the oldest living
plant on the planet (a specimen of King's Holly, named for Denny King and
estimated to be at least 43,000 years old).
Port
Davey is typically an 8-day hike from anywhere, but the 24 passengers on this unique
cruising adventure will travel, eat and sleep in the lap of luxury throughout
this expedition.
On
board the Luxury Exploration Vessel, MV
Discovery, passengers will cruise past the rugged headlands and large seal
colonies of Tasmania's
south-west coastline before entering the mirror-still waters of Port Davey and Bathurst Harbour where
they will spend three days totally immersed in the tranquility of this remote
and intriguing wilderness.
They
will cruise the 32km of sunken glacial valleys that make up Melaleuca Inlet and
Bathurst Harbour, visit
Denny King's home site, explore
hidden
coves and inlets by kayak and Gemini tender and climb to some of the vantage
points of the harbour to better appreciate the majestic sweep of this ‘other
world' landscape.
Discovery's 12 queen
cabins are each provided with panoramic windows, full ensuites and climate
control, while the restaurant, bar and lounge areas are fully appointed to
provide the 5-star ambience of a small luxury cruise ship.
Only
the finest of Tasmanian food and wine is offered daily by Discovery's on board chef.
Passengers
will pay just $1995 each (around $400 a day) to savor this once-in-a-lifetime
experience, which is another reason why WHC expects the cruise to fill quickly.
