WWF-Australia and Peregrine Unite for Albatrosses PDF Print E-mail

Antarctic expedition-style cruise operator, Peregrine Shipping and WWF-Australia have formed a new partnership to address albatross and seabird conservation. The partnership will focus on high seas governance, specifically Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) fishing - acknowledged to be the greatest threat to albatross survival.
The partnership will take a hands-on approach, with the two organisations working closely together on project development and implementation.

The WWF-Peregrine project, International Cooperation for the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels will involve joint projects with WWF?s international offices ? initially WWF-New Zealand and WWF-South Africa ? under the umbrella of the global WWF Global Marine Program. The aim is to develop new approaches to communications and advocacy in order to realise conservation solutions directly and effectively. The project will form a keystone of a proposed new WWF Southern Ocean Initiative to be announced in 2005.

?This is a great opportunity which will allow us to concentrate on the important work of conserving albatross. These magnificent birds are being killed in their thousands every year, with 22 of the 24 species of albatross now listed as threatened,? says WWF Director of Conservation Dr Ray Nias.

The two organisations ? each leaders in their respective fields ? will combine their expertise and resources, utilising the ?science-based solutions? approach of WWF, physically and financially supported by Peregrine Shipping.

?While the concept of ?responsible tourism? is gaining currency in the industry and media, the future will require tour operators to make more than a tokenistic gesture of ?giving something back?,? said Director of Peregrine Shipping, Andrew Prossin. ?We have forged this partnership with WWF as a genuine vehicle for making a significant impact on reducing the current unsustainable decimation of albatrosses.?

Building on the outcomes of recent international meetings held in Hobart in November, the project will focus on global efforts to end illegal fishing in the Southern Ocean and improvements to eliminate seabird deaths from all forms of fishing in the region.

WWF hopes that the arrangement will serve as a model for new and future corporate partnerships, while Peregrine Shipping aims to set a tourism industry benchmark for Responsible Tourism commitment, inspiring other tourism operators to follow its lead.
