New Sky High Attraction For Sydney
In
July 2005, Sydney's newest tourist attraction, Skywalk, is set to offer
spectacular views of the city and surrounds. Reaching new heights in
sightseeing, Skywalk will take guests on an exhilarating 75-minute
adventure over the roof of Sydney, 268 metres above the city below -
that's double the height of Sydney Harbour Bridge! Visitors will dress
in protective clothing and be safety-harnessed to external walkways
constructed around the peak of Sydney Tower. From the city's famous
beaches to the Blue Mountains, visitors can experience Sydney from a
totally new perspective. Expert Skywalk Leaders, the latest
multi-lingual audio visual technology, plus easily accessible platforms
- even for wheelchairs - combine to ensure that Skywalk will be enjoyed
by people of all ages. Open every day of the year (except Christmas
Day) from 9am - 9.30pm, Skywalk will cost $109 for adults and $85 for
children. It is expected that 250,000 thrill-seekers will visit the
attraction each year. For more details, visit www.skywalk.com.au
Sugaroom Set To Sweeten The Scene In Pyrmont
The
hottest new address in the burgeoning Pyrmont and Ultimo precinct is
‘sugaroom restaurant_bar_lounge'. Stylish, yet relaxed, the
waterfront multi-purpose dining venue derives its name from the former
CSR sugar refinery in which it is located. This latest addition to the
former working class neighbourhood continues the area's renaissance,
with an ever expanding choice of eateries and bars catering to the
throngs of young professionals who live, work and play there. In recent
years apartment blocks have replaced industry and terraces have been
demolished to make way for shops and offices. A walk along Harris
Street is a walk through history. Tiny nineteenth century terrace
houses, corner stores, pubs and the massive wool stores of the
prosperous 1880s co-exist with more recent arrivals such as the
University of Technology and the ABC headquarters. ‘sugaroom
restaurant_bar_lounge' offers a casual but innovative menu using chef
Greg Anderson's carefully sourced produce and creative cooking flair. A
relaxed but stylized lounge bar is also a key feature of sugaroom -
serving a range of in-house designed cocktails. Open for lunch Tuesday
to Sunday and dinner Monday to Saturday, sugaroom is also serving an
all-day brunch menu on weekends. It is located at 1 Harris Street,
Pyrmont. For bookings, call 02 9751 5055. Full menu can also be viewed

Sydney Opera House Gets A Facelift Sydney's
iconic Opera House is undergoing a makeover with the addition of a
45-metre colonnade aimed at enhancing the views of the world's most
spectacular harbour. The new works have been designed by the Opera
House's original architect, Jørn Utzon. For the first time, patrons on
the western side will enjoy water and city views - one of Utzon's key
principles in his original design for Sydney Opera House. The
colonnade, or loggia, will be the first structural change to the
exterior of the building since it opened in 1973. The new colonnade
will open up the entry to the Drama Theatre, the Studio and the
Playhouse. Nine new openings will be created - six new large deep set
windows and three doors. With over 50% of the façade becoming glass,
these foyers will be flooded with natural light. Construction has
already begun and is expected to be completed by year's end. For all
the latest Opera House happenings, visit www.sydneyoperahouse.com
The Archies Winners Now On Display
Visitors
to Sydney can now see the winner of Australia's most extraordinary and
contentious art event, The Archibald Prize. First bestowed in 1921, the
award attracts artists from all corners of Australia. Through the
bequest of its namesake, Jules Francois Archibald, The Archibald Prize
aims to foster portraiture among artists and perpetuate the memory of
great Australians. John Olsen has taken out the honours for 2005 with
his painting, Self Portrait Janus Faced. Janus, the subject of Olsen's
work, is the Roman god of doorways, passages and bridges. In the
painting, the artist is depicted with two heads facing in opposite
directions to reflect his life looking forwards and in the past.
Throughout its lively, and often controversial history, the prize has
been awarded to some of Australia's most important artists, including
George Lambert, William Dobell and Brett Whiteley. The finalists are on
display at the Art Gallery of NSW until 3 July. Admission is $8 for
adults, $6 concession and $22 for families. For more info or for a
sneak preview, check out www.thearchibaldprize.com.au
Flavours Of The World Come To Taronga Zoo Attracting
more than 1.3 million people each year, one of Sydney's hottest tourist
attractions just got a whole lot tastier with the addition of a
600-seat international food market at Taronga Zoo. The $6 million
Taronga Food Market features a staggering array of mouth-watering menu
choices with more than 300 dishes on offer. Visitors can select from
six distinct cuisine themes from the Asian-inspired Hot Wok to the
continental delights of Italian Bites. Diners will feast under
Thai-style pavilions, designed to complement the adjacent Asian
Elephant Rainforest. Panoramic windows face the new exhibit's elephant
pools and views of Sydney Harbour. For art enthusiasts - keep an eye
out for the giant mural created by renowned artist, Ted Scorfield. The
mural, which once graced the Ferry Terminal at Circular Quay until the
late 1970s, is now on display at the Market. To find out more visit www.zoo.nsw.gov.au or call 02 9969 2777.
Art On The Rocks
More
than 100,000 people are expected to observe Art On The Rocks over the
weekend of 28 and 29 May. This free event will see Australia's
birthplace transformed into an outdoor studio, with artists splashing
their paints against a backdrop of live entertainment including jazz
artists and classical musicians. The artists will then have until 10
June to complete their works before they are hung in a public
exhibition at the Sydney Visitor Centre, The Rocks, from 17 June to 3
July. Now in its third year, Art On The Rocks aims to provide a unique
opportunity for artists to create their works in a vibrant artistic
environment using The Rocks as their muse. The winning work will be
included in the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority's collection.
