New Australian Traveller magazine inspires Australians to see their country

A new domestic travel magazine, Australian Traveller, takes off on 25 May. And its fiercely independent editorial stance is expected to generate some turbulence.

Australian Traveller will be a monthly title, distributed nationally via newsstands, targeting a 25–55 year old AB readership and the $40 billion domestic travel market.

“We’re positioning Australian Traveller to fill a massive gap between the travel sections in the newspapers and the glossy travel magazines,” says managing director Quentin Long.

He says other travel magazines are either “singularly international and luxury focused” or magazines where “food comes first and second and inaccessible travel a distant third”.

“Australian Traveller will only cover domestic travel.  Our readers will be people who’ve travelled the world in their 20s and now seek unbiased and entertaining reviews of the best Australia has to offer.

“Above all our unique appeal will be integrity.  Our writers pay their own way and are briefed to report on the best and the worst of their travel experiences.”

‘The Good, The Bad and The Butt-Ugly’, by Suzi’s Petkovski’ (author of the Penguin Pocket Book of Travel Tips) is sure to raise some hackles in the launch issue as she nominates Australia’s blooms and blights.  Suzi’s must-sees include Fremantle (WA), Hahndorf (SA), Beechworth  (VIC) and Strahan (TAS).  But she recommends you keep driving if you’re on the road to Pemberton (WA), Whyalla (SA), Geelong (VIC) or Zeehan (TAS).

Australian Traveller will be edited by Greg Hunter, founder and launch editor of the ground-breaking Inside Sport magazine.

Editorial will be humorous and provocative, with regular contributions from writers such as Mark Dapin, and Chairman of Tourism Australia and former Deputy Prime Minister Tim Fischer.

In the launch issue Dapin muses on frequent flyer promises:  “You only have to spend $6666.66 to get enough points for a flight between Sydney and Melbourne.  Have a big night in with the average hotel mini-bar for company and you’re already halfway there.”

Passionate Australian traveller Tim Fischer reveals his Secret Spots of Australia - the remarkable and spectacular natural wonders that are often overlooked. Thomas Keneally is another well known contributor.

“We are looking forward to working closely with the travel industry and we will be offering special promotions and deals for travel agents and other partners to support them to promote domestic tourism, “ said Long.

Foundation supporters of the magazine include Northern Territory Tourist Commission, SA Tourism, Toga Hospitality, Voyages, Tyrrell’s Wines, Qantas Holidays and AAA Tourism.
