Northern Territory police say park rangers have discovered human remains at the base of Uluru in Central Australia.

Yulara police say they were contacted by Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park rangers about 7.30am.

They said the remains were found in scrub approximately 500 metres south-east of the base of the Uluru climb, within the world heritage-listed national park.

Detectives and forensic crews from Alice Springs have flown to Yulara to investigate.

Police said the body appeared to have been at the site for some time.

Update: 16 February 2009

HUMAN remains discovered at the base of Uluru last week have been identified as those of a missing Victorian man.

Craig Dallas Moor, 31, was reported missing on November 26 last year after his Ford Falcon sedan was found at the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park culture centre.

Mr Moor, from Nathalia, was travelling from Victoria to take up work at a camel farm 90km south of Alice Springs.

An extensive air and ground search across 700 square kilometres of the park was called off after two weeks, with police fearing Mr Moor had succumbed to the desert's harsh conditions.

Traditional owners from Mutitjulu, in the shadow of Uluru, allowed police to search the community, opening sacred sites not normally accessible to the public.

Mr Moor's family reported he was in good physical and mental health when he was last heard from.

On February 9, police reported that human remains had been discovered at the base of Uluru.

Park rangers came across the body about 500 metres southeast of the base of the popular tourist climb up the iconic rock.

In a statement released today, police said a forensic examination of the remains had confirmed they were those of Mr Moor.

No cause of death has been determined but police are preparing a file for the coroner.
