With February being the month that is most often associated with ‘romance’, the Italian capital is probably one of the most appropriate cities to visit this month. Apart from a wealth of historical sights, stunning architecture and wonderful restaurants offering delicious local cuisine, Rome has a magically romantic atmosphere.

Small Luxury Hotels of the World™ has a number of stunning properties in Rome, ranging from hip boutique hotels with contemporary design to former stately homes with exquisite art collections and incredible architecture.

Hotel Splendide Royal, a 19th century palazzo and one of the latest additions to the SLH brand, sits on a hilltop between Via Veneto and the Spanish Steps. Here guests can dine at the hotel’s Michelin star restaurant and admire the stunning views of the Villa Borghese gardens. Also new to the brand, and equally appealing, is the 12-room Villa Spalletti Trivelli. Located just moments from the Trevi Fountain, this noble neo-classical villa is more like a home-from-home than a hotel, with deep comfy sofas and a cosy library.

Located in the heart of the city is Hotel Art by Piazza di Spagna, which has an impressive collection of contemporary art, four floors of visual surprises and a futuristic style lobby. Close by are The Inn at the Spanish Steps and The View at the Spanish Steps, which both have an intimate ambience, a fabulous rooftop terrace and spectacular views of Piazza di Spagna. Situated by the Roman Forum and Colosseum is The Inn at the Roman Forum, which has a mix of contemporary and original features that include a 2,000-year old gallery with fascinating engravings.

Last but not least, tucked away in a quiet street close to Via Veneto, you will find Empire Palace Hotel. Its neo-gothic exterior contrasts with its modern interiors and impressive modern art collection. Enjoy a drink in the courtyard before dining in the elegant restaurant, complete with Murano glass chandeliers.

Must-do:

Take a stroll around the beautiful Villa Borghese gardens and lake before heading up to Pincian Hill, which offers outstanding views of the Eternal City.

  • After enjoying a leisurely lunch by the impressive Spanish Steps, walk down the exclusive street of Via dei Condotti, which is lined with a multitude of designer boutiques and jewellers.
  • Marvel at the peace and serenity of St. Peter’s Basilica, one of Rome’s most famous churches and also one of the holiest sites having been home to a church since the 4th century.
  • Drive to the ancient town of Tivoli in Lazio and visit the ancient ruins of Villa Adriana, an exceptional complex of classical buildings created in the 2nd century A.D. by the Roman emperor Hadrian.
