Clean Green Tourism Experiences In South Australia

South Australia’s tourism operators are setting the standard for sustainable tourism experiences and are adopting ecologically sustainable practices into their everyday business operations as they realise the benefits to the environment and their visitors.

Chief Executive of the South Australian Tourism Commission (SATC), Andrew McEvoy, says that South Australia is the perfect destination for environmentally aware travellers.

“The SATC is demonstrating its commitment to sustainable tourism through its support for Ecotourism Australia’s new Climate Change Certification program, which will allow the travelling public to identify accommodation and tours that are committed to reducing their carbon emissions.

“South Australia is already a leader in the field of ecologically sustainable tourism development, with around 15% of the nation’s Eco Certified tourism operators based here,” Mr McEvoy says.

“An increasing numbers of travellers are choosing ‘green’ holiday experiences, with ecotourism destinations now attracting about 15 per cent of the global tourist market, and that number is climbing fast.

“As people become more aware of climate change’s effects on the planet, they are looking for holidays that minimise their impact on the environment.

“The newly-opened Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island(www.southernoceanlodge.com.au) in South Australia provides incredible luxury for its guests while demonstrating how tourism can benefit conservation.

“Not only have the Lodge’s developers ensured their environmental impact has been minimal right from the start of the project, but they have announced the creation of a 10-year fund to support environmental projects on Kangaroo Island.”

Many other tourism businesses including restaurants and transport operators are taking part in ecologically sustainable practices to ensure tourists can enjoy their holiday in South Australia and reduce their impact on the environment.

After appointing Balance Carbon Pty Ltd to conduct a greenhouse gas emission audit of the business, Adelaide’s GoodLife Modern Organic Pizza (www.goodlifepizza.com) now proudly offer Australia’s first carbonless pizza, being one of the first restaurants in Australia to achieve zero net emission status (ZeroCTM).

In 2007, Enjoy Adelaide (www.enjoyadelaide.com.au) became the first day tour company to offset bus emissions by implementing a carbon emissions scheme with Carbon Neutral.

Carbon Neutral (www.carbonneutral.com.au) offers businesses the chance to offset their carbon emissions by planting trees in environmentally fragile areas of Australia.

A small tablet sourced from US company, Fuel Freedom International, (www.businessonline.mpgproduct.com) has helped SmartCar Adelaide (www.smartcaraustralia.com) become the first chauffeur limousine company in Australia to actively reduce its carbon footprint.

The tablet, placed in a vehicle’s fuel tank, has helped chauffeured transfer company SmartCar reduce its exhaust emissions (up to 75% per vehicle) and overall fuel consumption by 10% since it was first adopted.
