Valentine’s Survey Reveals Australians Cheat While Travelling
Couples beware: there is a one in four chance that Aussies going on holiday without their partners may well cheat while travelling.
A recent survey from leading online travel company Expedia.com.auTM has revealed that almost 25% of Australians admitted to having cheated on their partners while travelling on holiday.
Expedia.com.au Marketing Director, Kristi Barrow, said this finding was somewhat unexpected.
“We’ve all heard the phrase, ‘It doesn’t count if it’s in a different postcode’, but we never thought so many people would seriously be putting it into practice,” Ms Barrow said.
“Travel and romance have long gone hand in hand, whether it is a romantic holiday with your partner to a dream destination, the prospect of a new-found relationship or even a fling with a fellow traveller or local.
“This survey provides a fascinating insight into Australians’ romantic inclinations while on holiday and pulls back the sheets on people’s attitudes towards holiday flings,” Ms Barrow said.
The Valentine’s Day poll, which elicited responses from more than 5,000 people, showed that relationship partners should be particularly wary when their other half announces a solo holiday to France, where (34%) of respondents believe they would have the best chance of experiencing a holiday romance. Not surprisingly, Paris came out on top of the list of the world’s most romantic city (51%), followed by Venice (31%) and Rome (9%). Spain and the United Kingdom & Ireland also both came out as places where holiday flings were most possible.
While the vast majority of respondents (80%) said they would not base their choice of holiday destination on the sexiness of the locals, they did admit to finding Brazilians the world’s sexiest locals (34%), with Italians coming a somewhat distant second (23%). The Brits came out losers in the sexiness stakes, with only (4%) of respondents voting them as sexiest.
Closer to home, Sydneysiders (29%) narrowly beat Melbournians (27%) as the sexiest Australians. However, the same could not be said for the romantic appeal of our two largest cities: Sydney came bottom of the list of domestic romantic holiday destinations (2%), with Melbourne faring only marginally better (3%).
Queensland scored well in romantic Australian destinations, with 65% of respondents choosing the tropical Whitsunday islands as Australia’s romantic hotspot.
The foreign backpacker tourist haven of Cairns (25%) was named to be the best place in Australia to find a local holiday fling, while the nation’s capital, Canberra, came in as the least likely venue for a bawdy break with no votes.
For couples planning their Valentine’s Day activities this year, Expedia’s survey respondents named a sunset dinner cruise (45%) and a fancy candlelit dinner (27%) as the most romantic activities.
