Surf’s Up: The Girl’s Guide to Surfing (Allen & Unwin) was the world’s first learn-to-surf book for girls when it was published in the summer of 2003/04. Written with the passion that comes from over a decade of living the surfing life, Surf's Up takes you through practicalities such as getting over your fear of sharks, how to paddle out and stand tall on a wave, even how to buy your first surfboard. But Surf's Up is more than just a how-to guide. Louise Southerden has brought her love of surfing to every page, and offers up a glimpse of surfing sub-culture, surf lingo and the rules of the waves. She also includes quotes from surfer girls who have survived the learning-to-surf journey. Surf's Up is encouraging and empowering: a book no surfer girl should be without.

Louise Southerden

is freelance writer and travel photographer who is a specialist in active, natural and outdoorsy travel, with particular emphasis on “green travel”. She has been on many varied expeditions in Australia and around the world including: rafting the Franklin River in Tasmania, sea kayaking in Panama and the Arctic, canoeing in Canada and surfing in Sri Lanka. She also spent almost two years living and working in Japan and is the author of Japan: a working holiday guide. She hails from Sydney and divides her time between travel, her laptop, and the sea.
