'The Pope launches his own airline'

That's the headline from London's Sunday Times. While not 100% accurate, it is entertaining to read the Times' assertion that "the Pope has joined the likes of Richard Branson and Michael O'Leary by launching his own airline. The inaugural flight departs this earth later this month, flying from Rome to Lourdes." While Mistral Air is not actually the Pope's very own commercial enterprise, it is true that it's a Vatican-approved charter service that will begin flying Catholic pilgrims to holy sites around the globe.

"The spirit of this new initiative is to meet the growing demand by pilgrims to visit the most important sites for the faith," Father Cesare Atuire at the Vatican pilgrimage office, the Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi, tells the Italian daily La Repubblica. The charter service will fly to places like the shrine of Fatima in Portugal and the shrine of the Madonna of Guadalupe in Mexico, Reuters reports. Mistral Air's aircraft will be operated by the Italian postal service, Reuters says. The airline's slogan: "I'm Searching for Your Face, Lord."About Mistral Air (from Wikipedia):

Mistral Air is a cargo airline based in Rome, Italy. It operates scheduled cargo services on behalf of TNT Global Express and the Italian Post. It also undertakes flight training. Its main base is Rome Ciampino Airport, with a hub at Bologna Airport.

Mistral Air was established in 1981 by Bud Spencer and started operations in 1984. It is wholly owned by TNT Post Group.
