5 May to 2 June - Beautiful Arts, Beautiful Life! - 18th Macau Arts Festival
In keeping with tradition, the 18th Macau Arts Festival (MAF) will stage shows in several acclaimed Historic Centre of Macau sites such as the Dom Pedro V Theatre, St. Dominic’s Church and Lou Kau Mansion. The nearly one-month programme always injects new energy into the city, and this year promises to be no exception!
The dramatic arts will anchor this year’s event, which comes of age to the sound of applause for the centenary of modern Chinese Theatre. Cantonese Opera, Dóci Papiáçam (Macanese Drama), Yu Opera, Children’s Cantonese Opera, Tricycle and Chinese Shadow Puppets comprise just some of the traditional Chinese arts on the programme. From May 29 to June 2, Lou Kau Mansion hosts the fantasy of “Wayang Kulit” Balinese Shadow Puppets. This art form, recognised by UNESCO in 2003, travels from the remote islands of Indonesia to Macau to present “Sangaar Seni Madu Raras”.
In a clear show of support for local talent, Macau artists are given the opportunity to début works about the region’s history, while on the international front the Festival reaffirms itself as a staging ground for world trends in the performing arts, blending theatre with multimedia arts, dance, cinema and music in a selection extending, in addition, to little known Asian traditions.
