How to Hail a Cab in NYCYellow cabs are everywhere in Manhattan, cruising the streets looking
for fares. They are usually easy to hail on the street or from a cab
stand in front of major hotels. Still, finding one at rush hour or in
the rain can take some time. Even if you're stuck in a downpour or at
the airport, do not accept a ride from a gypsy cab.
If a cab is not yellow and does not have a numbered aqua-color plastic
medallion riveted to the hood, you could be putting yourself in danger
by getting into the car. |

If you want to spot stars in Tinseltown, West
Hollywood is the place to be, Jacqui Lang
discovers.
Was that really Jennifer Aniston's fantasy lover, Aerosmith's
Steve Tyler, in front of me?
I was at Robert De Niro's swish Italian eatery, Argo, in
Melrose Avenue, West Hollywood, where stars supposedly flock every night.
Newly off the plane; and already I'd stumbled on my first celebrity,
outside a toilet! |

Like many Australians
visiting the US, I simply saw Denver, Colorado, as the place the plane lands,
before you zip off to a ski destination like Aspen.
Now I've belatedly learned it's worth roaming around the "Mile High City," so
named for its distance above sea level.

Too many
Australians think of Philadelphia as a
brand of cream cheese, not the vibrant city worth including on a
US
visit.
But if you can
spare the time, Philadelphia - just
one hour away from the Big Apple by train, two by car - is rich in culture,
history and beauty. (Just take a thick coat if it’s winter; like
New
York, Philly can get mighty
chilly.)
