Cruising along the stretch of tar known as Bruce, heading south from Gladstone for The Town of 1770 and Agnes Water, you can tell you are heading somewhere special.

The country inland opens up, the hinterland rolling along happily, giving your gaze cause to linger away from the road for longer, perhaps, than is prudent.

Forgetting the new home of our Princess Mary, there’s another, closer, Denmark which is fast-becoming the “must visit” destination for Aussies. This tiny coastal town, in WA’s far south, has the added attraction of being warmer than its Scandinavian namesake - and marginally easier to get to!

Two mountains emerge from the empyrean flashes of green and blue from the lagoon. There is an elegant sweep of green lowlands and Kentia palms and pine trees that fringe the pristine white sands. The blue waves turn to white as they roll across the protecting reef.

You are about to land on Lord Howe Island.
