North
Star Shines in the West

Expedition
cruiser, Rod Eime, climbs aboard Western Australia's premier adventure yacht,
True North, for a unique and intimate sampling of our west's own special character.
Photos by the author and Austal Ships. The
scene is almost beyond belief. True North is anchored in the pristine waters
of UNESCO World Heritage-listed Shark Bay, 500 kilometres north from Perth along

turtle pops up to see what's going on while a squadron of bottlenose dolphins
cruise serenely past in search of food and frolic. A delicate brocade of velvet
clouds adorns the far horizon of an otherwise cloudless sky.

to decline between 1999 and 2000, even before the tourism trauma caused
by 9/11. The graph looks like a ski-jump now that some recovery from airborne
terror is occurring globally, but the scars remain. Kakadu and the NT
generally continue to lag.

around Cairns, so pack the flippers, hiking boots and
prepare for the dusty outback and quaint b&b's because this one's
got
everything. |

How genuine are the new cross-road all-wheel drives when it comes to tackling the rough stuff? We took a showroom standard Holden Adventra on one the toughest four-wheel drive tracks for Wheels magazine to the very tip of Cape York Peninsula. By Damien Reid Photos: Rod Eime It was an ambitious task, but what the heck, Holden's TV adds for the Adventra show it pulling boats out of the water, pounding through deep sand and wading through rivers, so we thought - why not? |
