Why drive to the snow each day when you can wake up in the thick of it?

If, like me, you get car-sick along mountain roads, then Victoria’s Mount Hotham is the ideal Aussie ski destination.

I stayed at Schnapps, a spacious apartment just a snowball’s throw from the chairlift, with killer mountain views. (Though at around $4000 a week in peak season it’s not cheap, with a kitchen, lounge, two bathrooms, and four bunks in the second bedroom it can comfortably house six.)

The City of Bunbury jumbo jet carried 5.4 million passengers and flew 82.5 million kilometres during her working life. Adrienne Costin discovered that even in retirement in the Queensland Outback, this grand old dame of the air remains most accommodating.

In this day and age of unlimited air travel the size of a Boeing 747 is no longer surprising, but when that jumbo resides in a regional airport and is exposing her inner secrets to visitors, she becomes quite special.

Ships of the desert cruise into the Whitsundays  

Camel rides in the Whitsundays – who’d have believed it. Adrienne Costin not only found them, she discovered they offered visitors an experience to remember.  

Like mirages, the string of camels appeared on the horizon, their longs legs stepping gracefully forward as they strode under the palm trees, the bright hues of their costumes creating a palette of primary colours on the Airlie Beach foreshore.
