BBC in Heathrow gun 'battle'. PDF Print E-mail

The BBC have apologised for filming a gun battle with actors dressed as Arabs near Heathrow Airport.

Police described those behind the idea to film where they did, as "idiots".

The incident caused a delay to a number of flights waiting to take off from the airport, says The Sun.

A dozen armed officers backed by a helicopter responded to reports of machine-gunfire beneath the flight path.

They surrounded a farm near Horton, Berkshire, and saw a number of "Arabs" with machine guns fighting a "running battle".

But as back-up arrived, they spotted several BBC film units - and realised it was a mock battle.

A senior Thames Valley Police source said: "It beggars belief that the BBC can organise a gun battle beneath a flight path without alerting us. It's fair to say our officers were not impressed with these idiots."

A BBC spokesman said: "A battle reconstruction with blank ammunition was being filmed at the farm.

"We were told police permission is not normally needed but with security concerns as they are, we should have asked."

Tourist got lost following 1914 guide book PDF Print E-mail

An elderly American tourist had to be rescued in Germany after he got lost while using a 90-year-old guide book.

Hank Edwards, 79, ended up stuck in a German forest for two days after finding his way with a book bought by his father in 1914.

Throughout the years he kept the book, practising the German words and studying the places mentioned in the copy of Beautiful Bayreuth.

When he was finally able to make the trip, he got lost trying to find attractions that had long since disappeared.

The alarm was raised when he failed to return to his hotel and he was eventually found by local rescuers sitting in his car that was stuck in mud on a dirt track.

"He told us he had read it over and over as a boy and had always wanted to visit the places listed in it," said a police spokesman in Bad Berneck.

"But owing to the Great Depression and the war and raising a family and working all his life, he said he never got around to actually travelling abroad until now."

The officer added that unfortunately, two world wars and a massive reforestation programme in the region meant most of the Bayreuth in the book no longer existed.

But he added: "It's still very beautiful here even if it's not what he expected."

A drunk passenger picked the wrong flight to cause trouble when he ran into the British police rugby league team.

The man became aggressive and nasty towards other passengers on a Singapore Airlines flight to New Zealand.

The cabin crew turned to the police contingent, which included one officer who specialised in airline security, Auckland's Sunday News reports.

"Really, it was about the worst flight for this guy to be an idiot on," said David Jenkins, the manager of the British police team.

"Although there wasn't much of him, it took three police officers to restrain him."

The rugby league team was heading to New Zealand for a test series against their Kiwi counterparts.

The man was met by local police when the flight landed, but no charges were laid because the pilot felt the British contingent had dealt with the incident 'effectively'.

A Birmingham woman booked her family a flight to Spain - and a hotel in Germany.

Christina Cooke scouring the internet for three weeks before reserving a hotel room which she thought was on the Costa Del Sol.

But when the family arrived in Benalmadena, they couldn't find the Avalon Hotelpark, reports the Daily Mirror.

They finally discovered it was 1,000 miles away - in Germany.

Christina, 28, partner Mark, 32, and daughters Charlotte, eight, and Alice, five, lost the £500 cost of their booking and had to spend £1,000 on another hotel and food.

Christina said: "I've got the wrong address before but never the wrong country. I thought I was being clever by cutting out the middle man. I'd managed to confuse the addresses."

The disaster emerged from an Airtours survey of 1,500 Brits who organised their own DIY trips instead of package holidays.

Passengers at an Indian airport were shocked when a hardcore porn movie was played on television screens for 20 minutes.

It happened at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi international airport at midnight when the airport was at its busiest.

Passengers were shocked by the sex scenes accompanied by moans and groans which echoed around the terminal.

Officials turned off the TV screens after complaints from passengers but the porn film was broadcast for 20 minutes.

Airport officials later claimed that a TV channel was broadcasting the film as part of an Aids awareness project.

However, airport sources claimed some employees were watching a blue film and accidentally sent it out on the airport's television sets.
