Cruise Ship Hits Iceberg - Again PDF Print E-mail

According to AFP, last Friday the Norwegian cruise ship MS Fram, which was carrying more than 300 passengers, struck an iceberg in the Antarctic after the vessel experienced technical problems with its propulsion system.

Argentine officials stated that the ship was on a Christmas Antarctic expedition until the ship’s propulsion engine ceased working.

It then experienced a blackout for around two hours and drifted around the Antarctic Peninsula’s northern region known as Browns Buff until it struck the iceberg.

“None of the passengers or crew was injured, there was no reported damage to the hull or spills, and there is no danger of sinking," said a spokesperson.

Norwegian passenger line Hurtigruten, MS Fram’s owner, later confirmed the incident but stated that the ship had experienced “no major damage”.

The vessel is now being taken to the Eduardo Frei Antarctic base in Chile where it will undergo examination before it is returned to the south of Buenos Aires, Ushuaia, on Wednesday.

This incident follows after the Liberian-registered cruise ship, The Explorer’s, collision with an Antarctic iceberg in November.
